Match 32 Scores

11 comments:

  1. Hey you guys.

Two matters we have to attend to. The first is the final supplemental draft, which would take place this Sunday. I'm cool with it. Let's just call it for whatever time - 11 am? We had to wait a little longer than normal at the start of the season; we'll make up for it now. Usual protocols pertain. That's my vote anyway.

This next one is a little trickier and I alluded to it earlier in the season.

Ticket's lineup went to five guys in Match 19 and has remained inert since. We all know why now. We made a decision at that point not to interfere with it, but to try and ensure that his opponents would not be advantaged or disadvantaged from that point on, which we have done.

Here's the catch. Four teams had played Tom's full-strength squad in Matches 15 through 18 in what was essentially the third round of head-to-head matches of the season. That means three other teams got to face the five-man squad in Matches 19-21. After that, the playing field leveled for all opponents, with everyone facing some diminished version of Ticket.

Here's my question: The three teams who got the extra match against the five-man Ticket in Matches 19-21, shouldn't they have to play some sort of restored version in the final three matches of the season? At the end of Match 18, when his squad was last intact, Tom's scoring average was 202.9 (203). Now it's 185.0.

You guys see what I mean?

There are a couple of potentially important implications to the decision we make on this, but I'm not sure if actual outcomes up to this point should have any bearing. It more of a simple equity question. Need input.

    1. So we would be looking at a sixth best player with full backups, for the remainder of the season, to make the strength of schedule equitable for teams moving forward vs Ticket squad?

  2. Wingos say let's not try to fix, we will likely only make it worse, and there is real gaming possibility. It's like changing lines at the bank, or lanes on the interstate. You churn, but ...

  3. who are the the 3 teams in this questionable circumstance? it seems to me unless it would change Wingos hold on home advantage for 2nd place it doesn't matter because we know the 4 playoff teams are set if it's my team or Dave or Sam does it matter?

  4. I suppose only P4 and Alt/Delete are technically eliminated so Dave has a chance to make the playoffs

  5. I was kind of hoping Mark would weigh in on this, he being our most astute mind in such matters.

I'm not gonna die on this hill, but I do believe there is a legitimate fairness issue here. I'll try to state it as clearly as possible.

Four teams played Tom in Matches 15-18, when he was at full strength for the last time. Two of them win, but two others, Swat and E Team lose. In Match 19, Tom goes down to five guys. I think it's fair to say that it came as no surprise to anyone at that point that he failed to miss the DNP. We already had serious concerns about his participation because he had stopped posting new headers on the old hoopssocial site and nobody knew how to step in to fix it. Not to mention his disturbing post of December 9, when he implied that he was checking out in some fashion.

Anyway, Wingo beats Ticket in Match 19 by two points, a match he certainly would have lost if Tom had still been engaged. Yes, Ticket went on the beat his last two opponents in that round of seven matches, but I don't know that that is relevant in any way.

As I said before, the playing field then leveled out for everyone who faced Tom over the subsequent 14 matches, the last of which we are currently playing. But now those same three teams that got the man advantage in Matches 19-21 will take on an even more diminished Ticket to finish out the season.

Now, two of those teams are P4 and Alt-Delete, both of which have been eliminated from Big Dance contention, so those matches are of little import. But the other is Wingo, the same team that got the two-point win in Match 19 when Tom went inert. And he may be about to parlay that advantage into homecourt in the Dance - over the same two teams who lost to the full-strength Ticket in the same round of competition.

You guys see what I'm saying? And is that fair?

Like I said, I'm not determined that we must act on this, and I only have one vote anyway. It just feels a little funny to me.

  6. as scorekeeper I can give you all a preview of theis match the ETeam and Wingoe are going to win after I total the Blazer game tonight and Swat is going to lose to my team so that would give Wingos a 3 game lead with 3 to play so it's almost a moot point I think isn't it??

  7. granted he could lose 2 or these games and the issue becomes relevant it's really something that needs to be decided between the 3 teams involved I guess my own opinion is its luck of the draw since the schedule isn't in any way biased in this discussion it's just sheer chance Wingos got a benefit and as Eric points out Tom actually won shorthanded a couple of times

  8. One last point is that going down to 5 guys happens relatively frequently P4 posts sporadically and often plays with 5 including this match against Wingos yet we aren't discussing that..

  9. Finals Eteam beats Alt/Delete 243-205...Nitecaps defeat ticket 220-133...Wingos over 5 man P4 221-188...Invaders beat Swat 247-209 Invaders 247 wins MHS

  10. Ah, so Wingo reduces his magic number to one with a win over the short-handed (no backups) P4. Sound familiar?

And now looks to clinch homecourt with a win over the shorthanded Ticket. Appropriate.

Okay, I admit, I'm a little miffed at some of the breaks that have gone Wingo's way. Part of me feels like the last three teams to play Ticket should go up against the 203 FPPG he was putting up going into Match 19, the way four other teams had. But I concede that would feel contrived at this point, so whatever. But there's a good chance Wingo will go into the playoffs with a double jeopardy advantage over a team with a higher scoring average, in large part due to some very sketchy wins, and that feels a little funky.

But hey, fine. Whatever. I formally rescind any request or recommendation. We'll let the Fantasy Gods decide.
